FanSets' Discovery Pin #7: Andorian

Pin #7 in FanSets' Star Trek: Discovery Episode Pin set collection is... an Andorian, quite appropriate since Harry Mudd slipped aboard the U.S.S. Discovery in an Andorian suit during the events of "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad."

Star Trek: Discovery, FanSets

The Star Trek: Discovery Episode Pin set, as previously reported, will include a total of 16 pins, specifically 15 episodic pins and an exclusive "Season 1 Pass Holder" pin. Every pin will note the season, episode number and episode title. After a new episode airs, EpisodePins.com will be updated with an image of that episode-specific pin. The pins will measure approximately 2 -2 ¼" square in size and feature a key person, ship, alien or item from each episode. As a special bonus, the first episode pin is an oversized 3" x 3" pin that celebrates the launch of latest chapter in the Star Trek saga.

Shatner and That Halloween Mask

Michael Myers' Halloween mask WAS Shatner's face. We at StarTrek.com love this story and we share it every Halloween -- just in case someone hasn't heard it yet. So here goes:

Urban legends are sometimes true. For example, it had been rumored for decades that the mask the killer Michael Myers wore in the Halloween films was in fact based on William Shatner's face. Not just Shatner's face, but a Captain Kirk death mask created for Star Trek. And the anecdote is very, very true.

Rick Sternbach, who worked as illustrator/designer on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Nemesis -- posted the following on his Facebook page a few years back:

"There are a number of historical threads through various production people over the years that validate that; I've got one of those threads here (I've told this story once or twice before). I was hired as an illustrator on Halloween 2 in 1981, working for production designer J. Michael Riva. In a supply cabinet at Pumpkin Pie Productions, we had one mask left from the original Halloween, and no idea where to get any others for the sequel. It appeared that we'd need to go check out some of the toys stores and such, but I noticed that there was some wording molded into the neck area. There was a model number, and 'Don Post Studios.' I made a call, read off the model number, and the word came back 'It's our Captain Kirk mask.' I asked if we could buy a number of them, and was told 'We'll give you a box, just give us credit.' With that, I turned the official dealings over to the higher-ups. Brush with greatness."

As if that weren't enough to confirm that Shatner/Kirk's mug indeed became that of the masked serial killer, here's an old video we found of Shatner himself discussing it -- and even revealing that he went trick or treating with his daughters one Halloween wearing a Michael Myers mask.

Terrifying, right?

Discovery Episode #7 Primer

Spoiler Alert! (Stop, if you haven't seen episode #6 of Star Trek: Discovery, "Lethe")

Last Time on Discovery

Star Trek Discovery, Sarek, James Frain

Sarek (James Frain) departed from Vulcan, headed on a mission of peace. Only, the young adjunct V'Latak (Luke Humphrey) had other plans. V'Latak, having injected himself with an explosive, states to the ambassador, "Your fascination with humans can no longer be tolerated." V'Latak wents boom, but not before Sarek created a shield around himself that staved off immediate death, but left him gravely wounded.

Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) drove Tilly (Mary Wiseman) pretty hard, drill-sergeant-style, as she pushed the cadet to shave 6.5 seconds off her running time. After all, personality doesn't count in the Command Training Program. Or does it?

Star Trek: Discovery, Jason Isaacs, Shazad Latif

Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) got better acquainted with new recruit Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif), as they engaged holodeck battle against a bunch of Klingons. Lorca killed 24, while Tyler claimed to have taken out 22. As they exited, Lorca noticed that Tyler actually killed 36. Tyler, totally busted, cites respect for his little white lie. "Don't apologize for excellence, Tyler," Lorca ordered. "I want my chief of security to shoot better than I do."

Star Trek: Discovery, Shazad Latif

Burnham and Tyler got to know each other a bit better as well, prodded by none-too-subtle matchmaker Tilly. He didn't seem to care about her reputation as a mutineer, noting, "I tend to assess people in the here and now."

The cute banter between Burnham and Tyler ended when Burnham grabbed her side, dazed and in pain. "Sarek?" she asked. Sarek, indeed. He's reached out to her through the mind-meld void. Cut to images of Burnham watching herself, Sarek, Amanda (Mia Kirshner) and others in the past, at the Vulcan Science Academy. Burnham watched her younger self -- let's call her Young Burnham -- be rejected by the Vulcan Expeditionary Group. Young Burnham apologized to Sarek -- we'll call him Past Sarek -- acknowledging that she was "not good enough."

Star Trek: Discovery, Wilson Cruz

Past Sarek suddenly saw Burnham and reacted badly. "This is my mind," he warned her. "Leave now." And he sent her flying with some Vulcan martial arts moves. Back in the present, Burnham awoke to see Lorca, Tilly and Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) gathered around her. Burnham explained that she shared a part of Sarek's katra. It was what saved her years ago when she died for three minutes after logic extremists bombed the Learning Center. And it may save Sarek now... if she can convince him to let her.

Lorca agreed to help Burnham locate Sarek. His decision is surely not altruistic. He wants and needs her loyalty, and there's no better way to secure it than to help save her father.

Star Trek: Discovery, Sonequa Martin-Green

Burnham formulates a plan to find her father in the Yridia nebula: she'll use herself to create a synthetic mind-meld augment. Stamets (Anthony Rapp), who was still a little off after using himself in a dangerous experiment, grinned and said, "Groovy."  The resulting "SarekVision," he announced, would represent "an uncharted superhighway connecting all of consciousness and life."

Tilly and Burnham needed a pilot to steer their shuttle through the storm within the nebula. "Luckily, I know a guy," Lorca said. Enter... Tyler. Lorca suggested that Tyler bring her -- her being Burnham -- back in one piece, "or don't come back at all."

Star Trek: Discovery, Jason Isaacs, Jayne Brook

Meanwhile, even as the Burnham-Sarek and Burnham-Tyler dynamics played out, Lorca dealt with a relationship mess of his own. Apparently, he's got a friends-with-benefits situation going with Admiral Cornwell (Jayne Brook). She took him to task for launching an unauthorized rescue mission using a convicted mutineer, not to mention a POW who's barely had time to recover. She was also displeased that Stamets engaged in eugenic manipulation and shared her belief that the events aboard the U.S.S. Buran changed him. One thing led to another and they ended up in bed, only for him to startle awake and put a phaser to her head. That was the last straw for her. She can't leave Starfleet's most-powerful weapon in the hands of a broken man, and he pleads with her not to take away his ship.

Burnham revisited the past again, believing that Sarek's dying thought was his disappointment in her. Amanda, with motherly pride and affection, told Young Burnham that she was as accomplished as any Vulcan and that it'd serve her well "as long as you never forget that you're human, too. You need to nurture that side."

Past Sarek again saw Burnham and lost his cool. They fought again, but this time she was more prepared. She argued that his katra beckoned her, to no avail. So, with Tilly and an initially doubtful Tyler, she returned to Past Sarek on that pivotal graduation day. And she did so with Tyler's words in her heart and mind. He'd pointed out that there's no logic in Sarek fixating on her failure. Rather, he believed that Sarek was was more likely the people he loved and how he wished he'd done something differently.

Star Trek Discovery, Sonequa Martin-Green

Burnham fought Past Sarek one more time, gaining the upper hand and pleading with him to let her save him. He finally relented, explaining, "I never lost faith in you. The failure on this day was mine... and mine alone. I will show you." And so, Burnham learned the truth, that the Vulcan director would only allow one of Sarek's "not-quite-Vulcans" to apply to the Vulcan Expeditionary Group. Sarek chose Spock, but Spock ultimately joined Starfleet, meaning Sarek's choice "merited nothing." Burnham reacted both angrily and understandingly. Sarek made an impossible choice, but not telling her the truth made her believe she'd failed him. He then acknowledged his shame, a repressed emotion if ever there was one.

Past Sarek then struggled to talk Burnham through a Vulcan mind-meld. "My mind to your mind... My thoughts to your thoughts." It worked. Tyler located Sarek's transponder.

Star Trek: Discovery

Lorca rewarded Burnham's efforts by offering her a bridge position: science specialist. She readily accepted: "I grateful to serve under a captain like you."

Burnham and the still-weak Sarek conversed in sickbay, his pride perhaps more injured than his body as he pretended not to recall what transpired between them. "You can do better... but I won't push you," she intoned. "We'll have this conversation one day... Father."

Burnham and Tyler, after a bit of serious conversation, got back to their flirty ways. "Michael Burnham," she said, extending a hand. "Nice to meet you." He nodded and replied, "Ash Tyler. We've met," to which Burnham responded, "Have we? Let's try it again."

Star Trek Discovery, Jayne Brook

Lorca recruited Cornwell to negotiate peace with the Klingons, as Sarek could not physically make the journey to Cancri IV. She informed Lorca that they will discuss his stepping down upon her return. Only, she didn't return. It was a set-up orchestrated by the Klingons, and Kol (Kenneth Mitchell) appeared via hologram, declaring that this was so much better than the high-ranking Vulcan he expect to fall into the trap.

Saru (Doug Jones) updated Lorca as to what occurred, fully expecting the captain, as usual, to go rogue. But, slyly echoing/borrowing Cornwell's words, Lorca ordered Saru to inform Starfleet Command and await orders, as "Starfleet can't afford to lose the Discovery. She's bigger than all of us." Lorca looked out the window, phaser on his person, reflection staring back, perhaps secure in the knowledge that Cornwell could not follow through on her threat, at least for a while or possibly... ever.

Next on Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery

In the new episode called "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad," as the U.S.S. Discovery crew attempts to let loose at a party, an unwelcome visitor (Mudd, once again played by Rainn Wilson) comes aboard, bringing about a problematic and twisted sequence of events (including time loops!).

Worth Noting…

David M. Barrett makes his Discovery directing debut with "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad," but it's not his Trek debut, as he helmed the "Divergence" episode of Enterprise back in 2005. Among his many other credits: FreakyLinks, Veronica Mars, Cold Case, NCIS: Los Angeles, V, Castle, The Mentalist, Blue Bloods and Zoo.

Halloween Trek Cosplay Advice from a Pro

Are you tired of wearing a uniform or Vulcan ears for Halloween, but still want to get your Trek on? If you can apply a little makeup and shop at a thrift store you can create your own unique Trek look without being a Cosplay expert.

Zombify Your Redshirt

You may have seen them staggering through the convention halls at many Star Trek or other conventions. The Walking Red are a group of Trek enthusiasts who regularly mashup Trek and The Walking Dead to create their own spin of both franchises. While some of the outfits may look complicated, with just a few steps you can turn a plain red t-shirt, a pair of black pants and a little makeup into a stunning look that'll make you proud to wear the red.

Needed:

  • 1 Red Shirt
  • 1 Pair of Black Pants
  • Zombie Halloween makeup pallet from any store

Optional:

  • Pre-made scars
  • Spirit Gum Adhesive
  • Small Bottle of Liquid Latex

Building the Costume:

Depending on how "fresh" your Walking Red is, you may not need to distress your costume. There are, however, many tutorials about how to "Zombify" your clothing. The typical look for Redshirt Zombies is some sort of phaser burn, which can range from a dark centered smudge radiating out to an actual burned hole in a shirt. In many cases, the pants are left untouched. How much you want to modify your outfit is up to you, as is whether you want to use the clothing for normal wear after it's washed.

Optional:

If you wish to add pre-made scars or prosthetic pieces make sure you thoroughly clean the area on your body you wish to apply your pieces with witch hazel or rubbing alcohol. Be careful around the nose, eyes and mouth to ensure you don't inhale, ingest, or contact the eyes with these astringents. This process will help your prosthetic pieces adhere more effectively by removing oils and dirt that hinder adhesion.

Follow the instructions of the adhesive and make sure you take the time to ensure proper adhesion.

Pro Tip: If you're using spirit gum, you can mix a small amount 1:1 with rubbing alcohol and use it to seal the edges of your prosthetic on top to create a top layer of adhesion that'll help the piece stay on longer.

Makeup:

Key points to a convincing Zombie makeup include hollowing out the eyes using darker black and browns near the center with lighter shades around the outside of the eye sockets. Highlighting the cheekbone ridge and blending into darker shades to hollow out the jawline will also help. Depending on how drawn you want your look to be, adding pinch lines around the lips and additional shading around the nose will enhance your character's emaciated look.

Finish your Walking Red with weathering by utilizing watered-down acrylic paint as a spatter overlay and using a chip brush spatter browns, dark greens and blacks to simulate the dirt and grit that naturally occurs in rough living conditions. This will help tie your makeup together and create that final gritty look important to these characters.

Bajoran Refugee - Maquis Resistance Fighter

You don't need to be from Bajor to look like a seasoned resistance member. Comprised of a mix of races, the Maquis provides an opportunity to design simple, off-the-shelf costumes or more-intense resistance fighters armed to the teeth. Ultimately, with some simple makeup and clothing you can usually pick up secondhand, you can build a look that'd make any Maquis member proud.

Needed:

  • Shirt or Tunic
  • Vest (turn it inside out)
  • Belt (wide if possible)
  • Baggy Pants (Twill weave looks great)
  • Boots or Scruffy Sandals
  • Bajoran Earring

Optional:

  • Nose bridge Prosthetic
  • Jewelry or assorted rustic pieces to add

Building the Costume:

The Bajoran look consists of primarily homespun items, creating a simple ensemble similar to peasant wear of the middle ages -- with a slightly modern upstyle in coloration and patterns. My outfit consists of a work shirt with the collar tucked under and a suit vest turned inside out to show a fabric pattern more akin to the Bajoran style. The shirt is left untucked with a wide belt, either solid or braided, fastened on top. Trousers should be loose-fitting and, if possible, have some texture to the weave. Boots or sandals finish the look. This look is fitting for men or women. If desired, a solid color dress with a shawl can also be used.

Makeup:

The Nose Knows…

Start with a lighter strip of color from about an inch above the eyebrows and continue down to the middle of your nose. Base out your ridge shadow lines in a dark brown or color that suits your complexion. Follow that with a lighter tone above the ridge shadow line and lightly blend upward into the ridge shadow line above, keeping the ridge lines sharp. If your ridges appear muddy, go over the top of the shadow with your shadow color to redefine them. It may take a few attempts and adjustments to get your ridges the way you want them.

Bajoran Refugee and Maquis Resistance Fighters lead a hard life, often being abused, or tortured upon capture during interrogation. Adding a bruise or scar helps pump up the realism of your character and makes it stand out. The bruising was created using four layers colors and blending to simulate a fresh-on-bone bruise with a blunt object.

Start with yellow in all the areas you want to highlight, adding green, followed by purple, and either black or deep purple. Blend with a stipple sponge and add additional color as desired.

Create additional action-based elements by utilizing watered-down acrylic paint as a spatter overlay and using a chip brush spatter browns, dark greens, and blacks to simulate the dirt and grit that naturally occurs in rough living conditions.

Nothing Runs Like a Nibiru

Fancy yourself clad in yellow and running through the crimson forest to reclaim your sacred text for honor and glory? If so, you may find that joining the tribe is the way to go to create a Trek-inspired look that catches the eye and draws the attention you desire.

Needed:

  • 4 - 6 yards Yellow Muslin (Depending on height)
  • White Face and body Paint
  • Black Face and body Paint

Optional:

  • Nibiru Facial Prosthetic
  • Bald Cap
  • Full Sclera Blackout Contact Lenses
  • Staff
  • Sandals

Building the Costume:

Robes:

Building the robes is easy even if you don't have a sewing machine.

This diagram will help you create the robes. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can cut ties into the fabric to bind both sides of the robe together. When done sewing or tying, flip the robe inside out.

Hood:

Take the excess fabric left from the robe cut and taking the top right tip, pull it down toward the left until the edge lines up with the left side (like you're making a paper airplane). Cut the bottom off, leaving a square. Tie the long ends together to form a hood and wear over your robe.

Sash:

Take the excess material from the hood and, depending on your waist size, use it as a sash. If you need more sash, cut the material in half and tie together to give more sash length. Tie off in the front and leave the free ends hanging.

The Eyes Have It

Tribal in nature, the Nibiru makeup focal point is the eyes. Their soul-swallowing black gaze was obtained with full-sclera black contact lenses used by the primary or "Hero" actors during the shooting of Star Trek Into Darkness. However, many of the actors playing Nibiru did not utilize contacts and still felt a part of their environment. I choose the more-attainable, eye-friendly way to create this look using simple makeup.

First, apply your white face and body paint to base out your face, neck, hands, and feet in white. Depending on the makeup, you may have to apply 1-3 coats to ensure even coverage.

After the white has been applied, use a flat paintbrush to paint your facial lines, arm and finger, and leg and feet lines. If possible, have the facial lines flow into the eyes to draw the observer's view to them. Lines on the arms and legs should follow the bone structure in a geometric pattern.

Add black shading around the eyes, blending with the white to provide a smooth transition. Add hollowing around the throat, jaws and chin and blend into the white to give the makeup more dimension.

As previously mentioned, applying a watered-down acrylic paint as a spatter overlay and using a chip brush, spatter browns, red, grey and black to simulate the dirt and grit that would naturally occur in the Nibiru homeworld.

Feel free to add subtract or modify these basic costumes and makeups to fit your need. Creativity is the key to building your best character. Let your imagination run wild and go with what moves you to Trek perfection this Halloween!
