Starbases of The Federation: From K-7 to Yorktown

The United Federation of Planets relied on its massive fleet of iconic starships to seek out new worlds in the 23rd and 24th centuries, but its network of starbases and outposts proved just as valuable to the exploration of space and the protection of Federation citizens. Most space stations shared similar roles, such as maintaining the capability to repair starships, but the type and location of each outpost dictated its primary role. While many starbases also included ground-based elements, this piece will only focus on the spaceborne facilities.

Deep Space Station K-7, introduced in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Trouble with Tribbles," played a vital role in the Sherman's Planet region claimed by the Federation and Klingon Empire. Acting as Starfleet's presence in the area, K-7 also served the tactical purpose of observing the Klingon border and providing storage for the development of Sherman's Planet. As with most starbases, K-7 maintained facilities to entertain weary travelers, Federation officials and even Klingon warriors. The relatively small station still retained the ability to store significant quantities of quadrotriticale, the grain necessary to seed Sherman's Planet and secure the Federation's claim on the world. Thus, Deep Space Station K-7 performed multiple functions, ranging from protecting the border to asserting ownership over territorial gains.

The Federation outpost Regula I worked toward a very specific goal in the Mutara sector during the events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Operated by civilian scientists, the station was tasked with the advancement of the Genesis Project. Regula I's remote location proved a necessity, allowing for discrete and undisturbed research. Due to its classified mission, Regula I did not permit casual guests or publicly announce its true purpose, whereas other Federation starbases tended to do so. The outpost's small size probably meant it had limited starship repair capabilities, if any at all. The U.S.S. Reliant, attached to Regula I as a scout vessel, most likely traveled to other stations for its upkeep.

The massive form of Earth Spacedock easily eclipsed the various starships that docked in its births and visited Sol III. The station launched new vessels, repaired others and decommissioned obsolete ones while maintaining a detachment of active starships ready to defend Sector 001. Although never canonically stated, Spacedock's size and strategic location seem to indicate its complement also included defensive weaponry for Earth's protection. In this sense, the starbase performed the role of securing a particular region of space, much like K-7. However, the Federation charged Spacedock with the fortifying its very heart rather than the edge of explored space. While the station's status as a shipbuilding facility remains unclear, the U.S.S. Excelsior did undergo tests and early transwarp trials at the starbase.

Stations similar in design to Earth Spacedock, such as Starbases 74, 84, 133, and Lya Station Alpha, appeared numerous times in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Why would Starfleet also construct these large outposts in seemingly innocuous systems rather than only near worlds central to the government? Ironically, the question most likely answers itself. As the regions where the stations were located tended to be away from major population centers, logic dictates that the starbases functioned as hubs for Federation activity in distant but strategically positioned areas. Sectors devoid of core planets require a place to repair starships, offer respite to weary crews, and fortify Starfleet's presence outside of prominent systems such as Vulcan, Andor, Sol, Tellar, Betazed and Trill.

The renowned port of Deep Space 9 changed its mission, and its location, following the joint Federation-Bajoran takeover of the station. Originally known as Terok Nor, a Cardassian ore-processing plant and symbol of occupation, the starbase became the operational center overseeing the rebuilding of Bajor. DS9 soon gained an additional task when Commander Sisko and Lieutenant Dax discovered the stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant in the Denorios belt and moved the station close to the anomaly. Suddenly, the starbase found itself to be an important locale for trade and exploration, welcoming travelers from Qo'noS, Vulcan and beyond.

As the threat from the Dominion increased and a full-scale war erupted, Deep Space 9 earned a reputation for its vital part in guarding the wormhole and preventing reinforcements from entering the Alpha Quadrant. The starbase displayed versatility in taking on additional roles beyond its original mandate to watch over Bajor, also acting as a repair hub for Federation, Klingon, and Romulan forces during the war. From refinery to strategic necessity, Deep Space 9 helped to shape the future of Bajor, the exploration of the Gamma Quadrant and the outcome of the Dominion War.

When Cardassian and Dominion forces reoccupied Terok Nor in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Call to Arms," the Federation lost its primary foothold against its foes. Starbase 375's proximity to the combat zone made it the natural fallback position for Starfleet. Otherwise a typical Federation station, Starbase 375's location turned it into a key staging area for starship deployments and Operation Return, the mission to remove the Dominion's presence from Deep Space 9. The progression of the war shifted the purpose of Starbase 375 to an unexpected trajectory, again displaying the adaptability required for Federation stations to operate at maximum efficiency.

A highlight of the film Star Trek Beyond, Starbase Yorktown proved to be a visually stunning marvel of technology. Easily the largest Starfleet facility ever depicted, the intricate structure houses millions of inhabitants and serves every duty imaginable. Located near uncharted space and the Necro Cloud nebula, Starbase Yorktown resupplies vessels, conducts repairs, builds new starships, acts as a home for crews and their families, dispatches missions of exploration, flies the Federation flag in the region and maintains defensive armaments. With its sprawling arms covered in cityscapes, interior tunnels funneling starships to their births and awe-inspiring transparent exterior, Yorktown represents the peak of Starfleet engineering. In addition to its variety of practical uses, Starbase Yorktown also helps the Federation avoid diplomatic incidents between new members by being positioned in interstellar space, rather than on the surface of a particular planet.

Without a reliable system of starbases, Federation vessels would not be able to function in deep space for extended periods of time. Starships receive most of the glory, but these stations offer safe harbors and defensible locales upon which the fleet relies. Whether orbiting Earth, overlooking the Bajoran wormhole, or sitting on the edge of the frontier, starbases ensure that crews always have a home away from home to visit.

Voyager's "Coda" Debuted 20 Years Ago Today

Janeway dies and meets her dad, Vice Admiral Janeway, but she's just not buying it. Such is the plot, or part of it, of the Star Trek: Voyager episode, "Coda," which first aired on January 29, 1997 -- or 20 years ago today. To commemorate the occasion, StarTrek.com is pleased to share several facts, figures and anecdotes about the hour.

"Coda" was the 15th episode of Voyager's third season.

Jeri Taylor wrote the "Coda" teleplay, incorporating elements of her Janeway-heavy novel Mosaic into the captain's background.

Memorable bit of dialogue #1:
"Maybe," Janeway suggested to Chakotay, "I could stand with an apple on my head and you could phaser it off."
"Sounds great," Chakotay replied. "If I miss, I get to be captain."

According to Memory Alpha, "The visual effect for the anomaly Janeway and Chakotay see from the shuttlecraft is a re-use of the anti-time anomaly encountered by the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) in TNG: 'All Good Things...'"

Emmy Award-winning actress-producer-director Nancy Malone directed "Coda" and, later, "Message in a Bottle." Malone, who played Millie Frazier in The Twilight Zone episode "Stopover in a Quiet Town," also had the distinction of being the first female vice president of television at 20th Century Fox. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 79.

According to Memory Alpha, the episode's working title was "Fractals."

Memorable bit of dialogue #2:
I know Captain Janeway wouldn't want us to be sitting around moping," Harry Kim said at Janeway's memorial, as the captain looked on. "She'd want us to be cheering each other up remembering the good times, like that away mission when we found all those bushes of overripe fruit. I must have eaten half a kilo. My hands and mouth were all purple, and the captain... the captain came and sat down next to me, and her mouth was all stained too. She put her arm around my shoulder and she said... she said... 'Ensign, these are the times we have to remember."

"Coda," per Nielsen, was seen in 4.6 million homes and achieved a 7% share.

Veteran Broadway star and Tony Award winner Len Cariou played Captain Janeway's father. The actor currently co-stars as Tom Selleck's father on Blue Bloods.

8 Things You Should Know About James Cromwell

Oscar-winning character actor and five-time Star Trek guest star James Crowell turns 77 years young today. Actually, he made even more Trek appearances if you break down things a certain way. He played Prime Minister Nayrok in The Next Generation episode "The Hunted," Jaglom Shrek in the TNG two-parter "Birthright," Minister Hanok in the Deep Space Nine hour "Starship Down" and Zefram Cochrane in Star Trek: First Contact. He also appeared as Cochrane in "Broken Bow," making an uncredited cameo in the Enterprise pilot, and via archive footage, in "In a Mirror, Darkly." To celebrate the occasion of his birthday, StarTrek.com is pleased to share 8 Things You Should Know About James Cromwell.

Cromwell is a Los Angeles native who grew up in New York City. And we're not kidding when we say grew up; Cromwell stands a towering 6-foot-7.

The actor's credits span more than 50 years. They range from The Fugitive (the TV show), Murder by Death, Barney Miller, Revenge of the Nerds and China Beach, Babe, The People vs. Larry Flynt, L.A. Confidential, The Green Mile, I, Robot and The Longest Yard to Six Feet Under, The Queen, 24, The Artist, American Horror Story: Asylum, Boardwalk Empire, Big Hero 6, and Murder in the First.

"It was nice to come back to Trek," Cromwell said of First Contact in a 1997 interview with Ian Spelling for the New York Times Syndicate. "Fortunately, Tom Hanks (a major Star Trek fan whom then-Paramount Pictures head Sherry Lansing hoped would play Cochrane) was too busy. That was a lucky thing, because I know the writers wrote Cochrane with me in mind. I thought he was an interesting character, and he plays such a pivotal role in Trek history. I have to be honest and say it's just another role for me. I enjoyed making the film and working with everyone again, and I gave it my all, but I'm not a Trekkie. I didn't watch (Glenn) Corbett's work in his episode."

Cromwell earned his Oscar for Babe, winning in the Best Supporting Actor category. A four-time Emmy Award nominee, he won in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his work in American Horror Story: Asylum.

Cromwell's ex-wife, Julie Cobb, played Yeoman Thompson in the TOS episode "By Any Other Name," and their daughter, Rosemary Morgan, guest starred as Piri in "The Chute" episode of Voyager. "It's all in the family," Cromwell said in 1997. "It's nice to know we're part of something that's so big and has been around so long. It means so much to so many people."

An ethical vegan and a longtime advocate for the environment and related causes, Cromwell -- along with Star Trek's J. G. Hertzler -- was one of 19 people arrested in Watkins Glen, New York, on June 6, 2016, during a protest opposing underground gas storage in salt caverns near Seneca Lake.

Cromwell's current projects include The Young Pope, in which he plays Cardinal Michael Spencer, advisor to the first American Pope, portrayed by Jude Law. He's also completed the films The Promise, with Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac and Star Trek Beyond's Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Marshall, with Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Steven and Sterling K. Brown.

And, for the record, Cromwell remains the only actor to date to actually say the words "star trek" in a Star Trek production. Cochrane, in First Contact, wondered/asked Riker and Troi, "And you people, you're all astronauts... on some kind of star trek?"

Please join us in wishing Cromwell a happy birthday.

The Undiscovered Lockbox

The final years of the 23rd Century were a time of great turmoil for the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans. Many advanced technologies were developed during this time period, some of which are still serviceable today. This time period also saw many shocking scientific discoveries, some of which are still not fully understood. Each faction has found that some of these technologies, including the dreadnoughts of the era, can be re-purposed for today's conflicts. Seeing the potential for profit, the Lobi Crystal Consortium has agreed to help update the technology of yesteryear… for the right price.

Some of the most iconic moments in Star Trek took place in the first six films. We saw the crew of the Enterprise, as well as some of their villains, reprise their roles on the silver screen. While Agents of Yesterday did not directly touch on points from these films, they're an era which we've wanted to explore more thoroughly for quite some time. The Undiscovered Lock Box presents players with a way to capture some of these moments. It contains ships, weapons and more which would feel right at home on the set of The Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country and all the beloved original Star Trek films.

The Undiscovered Lock Box's Grand Prize is the 23rd Century Tier 6 Dreadnought Pack, which contains three new TOS-era Dreadnought ships, one for each faction. Federation characters can get the Prototype Dreadnought Cruiser [T6], Klingon characters get the D9 Dreadnought Battlecruiser [T6], and Romulan characters get the Thrai Dreadnought Warbird [T6]. This pack may be freely traded between characters or sold on the Exchange, allowing Captains to get the ship of their choice. Each of these vessels has its own Console and Starship Mastery Trait.

The Prototype Dreadnought Cruiser [T6] is equipped with a Console – Universal – Dynamic Power Redistributor Module. Starships equipped with this console are capable of greatly strengthening their Structural Integrity Field for a short time, thus providing a large increase to hull regeneration rate and damage resistance rating. Additionally, this power can be redirected from the Structural Integrity Field to other systems to provide a large boost to all out going damage as long as the starship's hull strength remains at 80% or above. This console also provides a passive bonus to All Energy Damage Resistance Rating and Directed Energy Damage. This console may be equipped on any starship, but only one may be equipped at a time.

Completing the Starship Mastery Path on the Prototype Dreadnought Cruiser [T6] unlocks access to the following Starship Trait:

SIF Shunt

  • Activating any hull healing ability while at full hull strength provides a boost to all power levels.
  • This effect may stack up to 3 times.

The D9 Dreadnought Cruiser [T6] is equipped with a Console – Universal – Disruption Pulse Emitter. Starships equipped with this device emit a series of pulses from its deflector, wreaking havoc on critical starship systems. These pulses disable and deal moderate physical damage to any foes in front of the user. This console also provides a passive bonus to the Starship Control Expertise and Starship Particle Emitters skills. This console may be equipped on any starship, but only one may be equipped at a time.

Completing the Starship Mastery Path on the D9 Dreadnought Cruiser [T6] unlocks access to the following Starship Trait:

Catastrophic Overload

  • Jam Sensors deals high electrical damage, and disables targets in a large area on expiration, in addition to its normal effects.

The Thrai Dreadnought Warbird [T6] comes equipped with a Console – Universal – Secondary Shield Projector. A starship with this console equipped is capable of enveloping allies within a secondary shield. Affected allies gain a large amount of Secondary Shielding. Additionally, the secondary shield projector cleanses all Hazard and Debuff effects on affected allies once every second while active. This console provides a passive bonus to Shield Hardness and to the Starship Shield Emitters skill. This console may be equipped on any starship, but only one may be equipped at a time.

Completing the Starship Mastery Path on the Thrai Dreadnought Warbird [T6] unlocks access to the following Starship Trait:

Layered Shielding

  • Emergency Power to Shields and Extend Shields apply a moderate amount of Secondary Shielding to their target, in addition to their normal effects.
  • Layered Shielding does not stack.

Starfleet Captains may also purchase the NX Escort Refit [T6] from the Lobi Store. This ship comes equipped with a Console – Universal – Point Defense Bombardment Warhead. Activating this console launches a warhead that slowly travels to your target. Any enemy starship unfortunate enough to get within the Warhead's attack range will be repeatedly bombarded with photon torpedoes. The warhead detonates on reaching its target, causing heavy kinetic damage to the target and all nearby foes. This console also provides a passive bonus to Projectile Damage and Critical Hit Chance. This console may be equipped on any starship, but only one may be equipped at a time.

Completing the Starship Mastery Path on the NX Escort Refit [T6] unlocks access to the following Starship Trait:

Preferential Targeting

  • Activating Beam: Fire at Will and Cannon: Scatter Volley will cause Beam: Overload and Cannon: Rapid Fire to deal 50% additional damage for the next 30 seconds.

Klingon and Romulan characters may obtain the NX Escort Refit [T6]'s Console and Starship Trait via the Cross-Faction Bundle: NX Escort Refit Equipment in the Lobi Store.

(Additional information on the above starships will be contained in a separate Developer Blog.)

There are many other prizes within the Undiscovered Lock Box for players to acquire, such as R&D Packs, Boosts, and other assorted items. Captains seeking to broaden their repertoire can obtain the Cross-Faction Console Pack and Cross-Faction Starship Trait Pack to gain access to the consoles and traits from their opposing faction's ships.

Captains who wish to delve further into some of the mysteries of the 23rd century can make use of new 23rd Century Research Duty Officer Assignments. Each of these five assignments yields high XP and Dilithium rewards. Completing all the assignments gives additional Dilithium ore and a Title.

Captains may also find Undiscovered Bridge Officer Training Manual Packs. This pack opens into a new Training Manual for your Engineering, Science, or Tactical Bridge Officers. Each of these new abilities functions in Space, and are usable by Ensigns, Lieutenants, and Lieutenant Commanders.

Engineering: Overload Integrity Field I/II/III

  • Increases your Starship Hull Repair stat for 12 seconds
  • While active, being healed by Bridge Officer or Captain abilities will heal up to 3 allies within 5km for a percentage of the healing received

Science: Structural Analysis I/II/III

  • Target is affected by a Damage Resistance Debuff
  • Spreads to 1 additional target within 4km every 2 sec

Tactical: Distributed Targeting I/II/III

  • Marks a single target
  • A percentage of all weapon damage done to the marked target is chained to up to 3 foes within 3km

Additionally, the Undiscovered Lock Box has new Ground and Space weapons within the Undiscovered Phaser Weapons Pack. This box contains two advanced Phaser technologies developed during the late 23rd Century -- Pulse Phasers and Assault Phasers. Each ahead of their time, Pulse Phasers are devastating space weapons, while Assault Phasers were used by strike teams in the final years of the 23rd Century. Each of these weapon types share the Phaser Transfer characteristic, giving them a chance to reduce their target's damage resistance while simultaneously increasing your own. Opening this pack will give a choice between a random Beam, Cannon or Ground Weapon.

The Lobi Store also has a handful of new entries. Among these is the Type II Phaser Compression Pistol (c. 2285). This heavily-modified Type 2 Phaser Compression Pistol features a Compression Beam Setting, which can hit a target with a highly focused beam of Phaser energy. Firing either the primary or secondary beam settings of this weapon can trigger the Compression Burst auxiliary setting, causing an additional high-damage burst of Phaser energy to the target, repelling and stunning them for a short time. This weapon has a chance to apply a Phaser Transfer, which reduces your target's damage resistance to increase your own.

Captains looking for a new Environmental Suit may make use of their faction's Experimental Environmental Suit (c. 2293). These EV suits offer a high degree of protection from all hazards a special operative may encounter – such as solar flares, high radiation levels, and incoming weapons fire. The suit is also equipped with an Automated Threat Dampener package, designed to increase the wearer's chances of survival by causing the assailant to inflict less and take more damage.

As space can be a cold, lonely place, Captains may now purchase a Farpoint Cnidarian Companion of their very own. Affectionately referred to as "Space Jellyfish," these creatures are in a larval state, and will imprint onto their user. This larval state also makes it difficult to identify exactly which sub-species is contained within until the pack is opened. They will flee from Combat, and cannot be called while piloting a shuttle, fighter, or other small craft.

Finally, the Zambean Outfit and Ithenite Outfit are available for Captains to purchase and wear. Both of these attires can be seen at the Babel Conference in 2268, and have varying degrees of customizability.

The Undiscovered Lockbox, as well as the additional Lobi Store entries, will be coming to PC with the launch of Season 12: Reckoning.
